Hunteria umbellata K. (Schum) is a small tree of about 15 – 22 m in height with a dense evergreen crown (Oliver-Bever, 1986) of great medicinal benefits commonly found in West and Central Africa. H. umbellata are found in Nigeria, particularly the rain forest zone of the southern part with the local names, Osu (Edo), Erin or Abeere (Yoruba) and Nkpokiri (Ibo) (Boone, 2006).

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) infects about 3 billion people worldwide with about 10% of those infected, developing the clinical disease. People infected with Mycobacterium tuberculois have a 10% lifetime risk of falling ill with tuberculosis, however this depends on a compromised immune system, overcrowding and general poverty (WHO 2014, 2013).

Escherichia coli (E. coli), an Enterobacteriaceae is an intestinal commensal bacterium of humans and animals. E. coli can be opportunistic or true pathogens causing illnesses such as intestinal and extra-intestinal infections, urinary tract infections, gastro-intestinal infections, meningitis, peritonitis, and septicemia (Kaper et al., 2004).
