I am excited to welcome you to the resuscitated edition of our Journal “Biomedical Science Digest”. The journal has hibernated for over a decade. The previous editions of this journal were published by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Lagos State Teaching Hospital and College of Medicine, University of Lagos (LUTH/CMUL) Chapter. This awakened edition was made possible by the dynamic executives of this association (AMLSN-LUTH/ CMUL) in collaboration with the Lagos State Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists and the Department of Medical Laboratory Science of the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos. The New Editorial team has procured an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), which will help distinguish, catalog, and ensure the journal's indexing. The journal remains the mouthpiece of diagnostic sciences including bacteriology, virology, parasitology, chemical pathology or medical biochemistry, immunology, blood serology science, and hematology, histopathology, molecular diagnostic, etc. The scope of the journal is now expanded to all areas of life sciences, natural sciences, and pure and applied sciences, especially with clinical or medical relevance. This is in alliance with the global trend of multidisciplinary collaboration in research and innovation. This will also allow for copious subscriptions and patronage thus increasing the quality of the journal. All the papers published in this edition underwent stringent peer-review processes involving initial assessment by the Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor to determine the appropriateness of the manuscripts and subsequent allocation to highly skillful and experienced reviewers. The manuscript is thereafter followed by a minimum of two reviewers. The first highlight of this edition is an article titled “Preliminary Investigation of the phytochemical properties of the Aqueous and methanolic crude extracts of Hunteria umbellata K. (Schum) seeds and its hypoglycaemic effect on streptozotocin-induced Diabetes Mellitus in Wistar rats. This article reported that H. umbellata showed hypoglycaemic activity in rats with the resurgent islet of Langerhans β-cells. The second highlight is an extensive review that explores the evolving science of nanotechnology and nanotoxicology. The paper traverse through the macro-elements to the nano-scale particles and their influence on the environment and health. Nanoparticles are not yet regulated in any part of the world. There is a need for vigorous research and more information that will guild global and local policies on the use and application of these materials. The fifth highlight titled “Changes in plasma level of oxidative stress biomarkers in rabbits given chloramphenicol overdose supplemented with Solanecio Biafrae (worowo) leave extracts reported detoxification properties of these extracts in an experimental animal model. These papers are of national importance that hopes to stimulate more rigorous research into medicinal plants to discover important therapeutic properties of plant parts or extracts for possible interventions and management of ailments, especially non-communicable diseases. The other highlights are interesting manuscripts on current subjects of infectious diseases. This ranges from antibiotic susceptibility to suggestion of biomarkers for monitoring the treatment of Mycobacterial Tuberculosis. The three titles; “Characterization and antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacteria associated with the pelvic inflammatory disease among women attending private hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria and, “Levels of human indoleamine 2,3-Dioxygenase (IDO) in the plasma of Nigerian pulmonary tuberculosis patients” and “fecal carriage of Multidrug resistance and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase in Escherichia Coli among medical Students” are part of the delight of this edition. These are not just tropical challenges of national interest but also global concerns. Evidence-based appropriate medication and the ability to monitor therapeutic progress are undoubtedly the utmost desires of both patients and healthcare professionals. Finally, we have ambitiously chosen quality over quantity and rejected papers that do not meet our standards. This edition is therefore limited to quality manuscripts that have met the standard. I, therefore, congratulate the authors of these published articles. I am particularly delighted with this edition's geographical spread and multidisciplinary nature. I am proud of the editorial team that has made this edition possible. I appreciate and acknowledged our meticulous reviewers for a job well done. Together we shall keep this journal alive.
